A Sydney home that last sold for $51,000 is back on the market – after 50 years!
When Frank and Suzanne Davidson bought 23 Elizabeth Street in 1972 that was a decent chunk of cash, but today their Victorian character home is going to auction with a price guide of $8 million.
The couple are now moving into a retirement home, so their 354sqm block in tightly held Paddington will be going to auction on May 8.
Bresic Whitney agent Maclay Longhurst says the iconic home has been incredibly popular.
“Something like this doesn’t come onto the market very often – it’s got a 10.5-metre Victorian terrace, a pool, and rear lane access for parking.
“It’s a home that’s been extremely loved by the family, and it’s likely to be a family home again,” he says. “We have five contract holders right now, and it’s still to go to auction.”
The two-level home has undergone a series of renovations over the years, the most recent ten years ago when folding glass doors were added to the back. Despite this, the home’s Victorian detail has been lovingly preserved in nearly every room.
At the front of the home, a double lounge displays that beautiful Victorian detail. Crystal chandeliers hang from intricate medallions, but for another source of light – and warmth – the marble fireplace is the perfect addition.
The kitchen is significantly more modern, with concertina folding glass doors letting out onto the deck, and a substantial granite breakfast bar. Surrounded by potted shrubs and beautifully private, the poolside deck is the perfect spot to enjoy a lazy afternoon. The pool is another owner addition, but there’s still room for secure parking for two cars beside it!
Four of the five bedrooms can be found up the carpeted stairs, each with its own sense of style. The old-world charm can be found upstairs too, thanks to marble fireplaces and wrought iron chandeliers, while the crisp white walls and modern beds stop it feeling too dated. Shared balconies connect to the outside, and the master bedroom enjoys a truly magnificent dressing room and en suite.
“We have five contract holders right now, it’s been quite popular,” Maclay says. “350 plus square metres in Paddington doesn’t come along very often.”
“We anticipate a healthy auction.”
