FOLLOW UP: New beginning for 1930s Goulburn church

A Blue Mountains family is celebrating after beating 11 other bidders to an historic 1930s church near Goulburn, NSW, on Saturday, February 6.

St. Columba Church at 1042 Middle Arm Road, Middle Arm, which OzHomeNews flagged last week, sold for $350,000 in an unusual auction. The event began slowly before going “berserk” after it passed in, according to Nutrien Harcourts Macquarie Park sales agent Peter Reardon.

“We couldn’t get anyone bidding,” Peter says. “We had a couple of bids and it passed in. Then everyone tried to buy it after the auction with six people really trying to buy it. In the end, we negotiated a deal with the underbidders.”

Peter adds the underbidders came out of this deal as the lucky buyers of the heavenly property. Set on one acre, St Columba features a bell tower, Kauri pine floors, vaulted Kauri pine ceilings with exposed beams and leadlight windows plus the original altar. The buyers now plan to renovate it and turn it into a residence.

“They may extend it at the back but the renovation will be in keeping with the church’s design and style,” Peter says. “It does need a lot of work though and there are no services connected.”

Peter admits it felt a little strange auctioning a church but he would happily take one on again.

“Churches are highly sought after,” he says. “They’re actually more work than the average house as we receive a lot of inquiries about them.”
