Hamilton’s antique dream goes to auction

Hamilton’s antique dream goes to auction

A federation Queenslander in the bluechip Brisbane suburb of Hamilton will open its doors for the first time in 43 years when it goes to auction in April.

The 2,049sqm estate was purchased by the late, renowned antique dealer Jill Phillips and her husband Lance in 1978, and the pair contributed substantial renovations to the property in their time.

Originally built in 1907, the multi-million dollar property retains many of its original period features, like the pitched terracotta-style roof, large bay windows, pressed metal ceilings and timber detailing.

Today, the two-storey dwelling known as ‘Blair Lodge’ is a little more modern, but it still commands incredible views of the Brisbane River and CBD.

Place Kangaroo Point agent Courtney Caulfield says it’s not just the size of the holding that’s impressive.

“There’s a lot of large blocks you can get even in Hamilton, but there’s not many with a river view and a city view on that big a land size,” Courtney says.

“It’s attracted a lot of attention. We’ve had a range of buyers through, from families looking for land to couples looking to downsize,” she says. “The majority of people, though, aren’t looking for just any property, they want a landmark – something with history – as well as a large landholding.”

The site offers large gardens around a two-level, Queen Anne style home. Soaring ceilings let in vast amounts of natural light and breezes for perfect entertaining conditions all year round.

The ground floor boasts formal and informal entertaining spaces, an open-plan kitchen, and two of the six total bedrooms, with a delightful blend of older and contemporary design. One sitting room has a mesmerising floral wall pattern, while the billiards room enjoys original stained glass windows and VJ wall panelling.

“99 per cent of the styling is down to Jill’s influence, along with her daughter Leah,” Courtney confides. “It’s a beautiful home, with a beautiful mix of styles.”

The master bedroom is full of light, thanks to its corner position, and the attached en suite still has the original stained glass!

The joint kitchen and informal dining room can be found at the other end of the lower floor. Granite countertops provide a modern counterpoint to solid timber cabinets and smooth wood underfoot. A central brick chimney helps separate the kitchen from the family area, and provides a fantastic source of warmth in winter!

In the adjoining room, a formal dining chamber enjoys Carrara marble floors – an addition to thank Jill for – a stately fireplace, and a welcoming bay window.

The remaining bedrooms, bathroom and attic space can be found upstairs. The fantastic 80s-style bathroom was installed by Jill and has a raised, wood-panelled round bathtub, and moss green carpet.

Outside offers a peaceful lifestyle, with paved courtyards, pretty blue trim and lush lawns. In terms of position, the Lodge’s placement allows you to walk or ride to Racecourse Road, Portside Wharf and multiple parks, and it’s less than 10 minutes to the Brisbane City and Brisbane Airport.
