Ten minutes from the heart of Byron Bay is Soma, a sculpture hiding in its own patch of forest.

Warm, modern and harmonious, this purpose-built oasis is somewhere to transform your mind, body and soul.

It’s a wellness retreat set in the midst of 22 acres of Byron hinterland. There’s nothing but gobsmacking views out here, with meadows, rainforests and gentle hills rolling down into the ocean.

Gary Gorrow and Peter Ostick are the minds behind it all, coming together in 2019 with the goal of making meditation and mindfulness accessible to all.

In Soma, they have achieved their goal.

Designed for yoga enthusiasts, the two-storey house drinks in the landscape through endless windows. Inside, plant-filled atriums and internal gardens change the way you look out at the world, and within yourself.

It feels more like a designer home than a hotel. You’d expect to see a lobby when you come in, but instead you’re greeted by walls of glass with a magical view. That magic remains with you, as you disconnect from distractions and enter luminous spaces filled with light.

There’s a rawness to the rooms that encourages reflection. Polished concrete floors are offset by timber and glass finishes, perfectly blending natural and manmade textures.

Ground yourself in what you can see, touch and feel, but then go beyond it all – breathe and expand your vision.

The communal living area is expansive, and designed to bring people together. An incredibly long table – built from a fallen tree brought over from Java – invites strangers to come together for a meal, and leave together as family. Off to the side, wall-to-wall glass lets out onto a freshwater infinity pool and raw timber deck. Imagine mornings spent meditating on the deck, watching the sunset with legs dangling in the pool, or cuddling up by the firepit, roasting marshmallows in the evening…

The retreat sleeps up to 20 across ten bedrooms. They’re very comfortable, and very stylish. Large windows make a reappearance in the bedrooms, offering soothing views of the landscape, and sliding doors allow the fresh air to come in.

Past the sharehouse is a gorgeous bamboo forest, through which a path leads to the star attraction. Called the Yoga Dome, it looks almost like a crystal ball, where you can practice Vinyasa Flow and Yin Yoga under the guidance of founder Gary Gorrow.

It’s here, under the stars, where you’ll rediscover a sense of curiosity and wonder. Ask questions, seek answers, and watch how life flows around you.

Whether you come to Soma searching, or to solidify what you have and what you know, you’ll take away the knowledge of how to reach out to nature, and witness it open up to you… A world of beautiful possibility that leaves you feeling relaxed, relieved, and above all, rejuvenated.
