Glen Iris will be transformed by mixed-use project
A bustling Melbourne suburb is set to undergo a transformation with plans for a vibrant mixed-use development in the pipeline.
The 90-apartment project at 173 Burke Road in Glen Iris will feature a state-of-the-art Woolworths supermarket and its eye-catching design will capture the character of the popular neighbourhood.
Currently an outdated office building, the 4,306sqm site is set be revamped and will feature quality one-, two- and three-bedroom terrace-style apartments that will boast proximity to Central Park.
Woolworths State Development Manager Don Foulds explains that the project will tap into the suburb’s identity and put a spotlight on the area.
“This development application delivers a clear vision to revitalise the site and deliver a thriving, contemporary and convenient mixed-use development,” he says.
“Our proposed designs aim to reflect the unique local character of Glen Iris while delivering on Stonnington Council’s vision for high-quality housing and convenient shopping for the area,” Don adds.
It’s expected that the development, led by Time & Place, will create 250 jobs during the construction phase and a further 120 once the retail facilities are up and running.
Time & Place Principal Edward Pearse says that renowned architecture firm Carr has done a brilliant job designing a product that will really stand out from the crowd.
“The design we’ve put forward doesn’t look like a traditional apartment block,” he says. “It takes cues from suburban living and Australian Modernism to improve this under-utilised portion of the Burke Road,” he says.
We’ve looked to bring the best of traditional terraced homes – from their sustainable design and down to the entry experience – to a higher density project

Each apartment will feature its own stylish external entry, allowing for dual aspect, improved levels of natural light and ventilation which in turn will provide an energy efficient product.
“We’re confident, together with Time & Place, we can deliver a high-quality development, with a full-line modern supermarket that meets the needs of the Glen Iris community,” Don says.
