Today’s ON THE SPOT with Emil Juresic features Chris Clout – a multi-award-winning building designer, who is well-known for his extremely unique creations.
Emil calls him “Elon Musk of design”, and not without reason, Chris has managed to build himself an amazing brand and career, with his name known throughout the real estate, construction and development industries.
Watch the interview to hear all about Chris Clout’s story and find out how exactly he moved on from building cubby houses to designing luxurious multimillion-dollar homes that are anything but ordinary!
This 36-year-old genius started his company 12 years ago, back in 2008, after being taught by his father, a builder, and his uncle, Paul Clout, a renowned designer himself.
“When I was young I didn’t really know what I was going to do, I just grew up in a family of builders and designers,” explains Chris.
After moving up to Noosa, Chris found his passion for designing intriguing, special homes.
“Noosa was a really hot spot with cool, new, modern houses and it inspired me,” he says.
He was also inspired by his uncle Paul, who he worked with for multiple years, gaining a lot of valuable experience in the process, before founding his very own company,
“That was great because I think I designed about 100 homes for him,” Chris explains.
“I think I’ve always wanted to have my own business, I’ve always had a dream of something like that so I don’t think that was ever a doubt,” he says.
A lot has changed in the industry since those days, and Chris says that he is constantly learning as he goes. One thing that has definitely helped him with his one-of-a-kind designs is the experience gained from construction, as he knows what each design requires from a building point of view.
“That’s where carpentry and building comes in handy, because I know what’s involved,” Chris explains.
With more than 100 awards in his trophy cabinet, Chris gives a valuable word of advice for those looking to build a home, something he aims to keep doing for the foreseeable future.
“You need to have something that’s unique, design something that’s not like everything else, you need to stand out,” he says.
“I want to keep creating the houses I’m doing,” says Chris.
“Things that are basically like a piece of art, there’s nothing like it in the world, that’s what’s special to me. It doesn’t need to be certain style, it’s just having its character and its theme!”
