Looking for a little staycation on the Gold Coast? Why not step back in time and check out this retro-chic hotel.
There are some major Cali Cool vibes at Coolangatta’s Pink Hotel, where there’s so much buzz and excitement around it’s easy to get sucked into staying here for an extra night or two.
The refurbished 1950s boutique hotel is just across from the beach, and full of Scandinavian and mid-century influences. Look at the groovy, retro decorations everywhere: neon lights, tongue in cheek slogans, plastic pink flamingos…you know you’re on vacation now!
The fun starts at reception, but as soon as you step in you’re encouraged to wander. You might even find your way to secret hideouts, like the hidden ‘Janitor’s Closet’. It’s actually a dusky piano bar, spruced up with bright artwork, and on Fridays and Saturdays it comes alive with awesome tunes. Whether you’re after a burger or drink, relax back on a velvet couch and let the live music take you away.
The stairs may seem skyhigh while you’re climbing them, but this rooftop hideaway is well worth the climb! It’s one of the most beautiful views in Coolangatta, and only accessible by guests of the Pink Hotel. Views of the coastline stretch for 57 kilometres on both sides, and the atmosphere is ridiculously good. You’ve got daybeds to sunbake and watch the sun go down, and you can order drinks and food from Santeria, a simply divine rooftop bar.
The rooms are quirky and fun, and range in size from King rooms to a two-bedroom suite with an entertaining area. To see just how funky they can get, check out the artist suite; a retro wonderland. You have to love the full kitchen, with a retro Smeg fridge (one in every room!) and drawers that look like lockers. Flamingo robes are supplied as well for the ultimate Cali look, and there’s a different wall decal in every room.
The attached bathroom is just as wonderful: stylish and sophisticated with a touch of Scandinavian influence, and perfect for the end of a day at the beach.
If you need a boost just pop downstairs for a barista-made coffee – they’re serving them until 8 pm – or take the three-minute walk down to Coolangatta’s many shops, restaurants and bars. Just ten minutes from the airport, and steps from the beach, this is the kind of holiday hard to leave.
