Sitting quietly on Spring Hill’s Wickham Terrace, this is Brisbane’s very first high-rise building.

Built in the Spanish Mission style, at only seven stories high it’s quite the odd one out, but for a 93-year-old building, it was quite tall for its time.

Today, the building known as Craigston looks charming, especially when you enter through the leafy courtyard into the residential side of the building.

In the foyer is Brisbane’s oldest operating lift, and one of its most sophisticated. Gilded in wood, the names of every owner has been engraved inside, and soon another name will be joining the list.

The seventh floor of Craigtston houses the penthouse suite, one of only 11 residences in the entire building, and it’s been listed for sale for offers over $3.5 million.

Arriving on that top floor you’re greeted by a light and airy space totalling just under 300sqm. Directly in front of you is the living room, where the timelessness of the build coordinates wonderfully with the elegant furniture and beautiful domed fireplace.

Original hardwood flooring, detailed plasterwork, and antique chandeliers… you could be anywhere in the world, from Paris to New York.

The Spanish influence is especially apparent in the sunroom, where large timber shutters let you control the light. The north-east facing room was originally a verandah, but enclosed in the 30s, and now it makes the perfect all-weather room.

The kitchen is modern and fresh with Italian Carrara marble benchtops, but elements of the building’s history remain, like the dumbwaiter that travels the full length of the building!

At the back of the house are the five bedrooms, two of which were originally maids’ quarters, and the meditative master suite.

Past the bedrooms, you’ll find the stairs to the residents’ rooftop terrace – the perfect spot for hosting memorable parties well into the night.

The world around Craigtston may have changed but its old-world appeal can still be felt today, because great works of art stand the test of time, and will always be appreciated.
