Battery Point’s biggest holding on the market

Battery Point’s biggest holding on the market

Hidden away on one of Hobart’s most desirable streets, a Victorian Gothic façade hides a surprisingly modern home.

First built in 1878, ‘Vernon’, at 11 Mona Street Battery Point, is a five-bedroom, two-storey house set in the middle of 1,814sqm of picturesque grounds.

“It’s the largest parcel of land to go on sale in Battery Point this century,” Peterswald for Property agent Kim Morgan says. “It’s quite a rare property and it’s attracted overwhelming interest.”

“It would be a wonderful family home, the lifestyle it affords would be tremendous,” he says. “Especially for anyone that likes gardening!”

From the outside, a tower, chimneys, detailed timber gables, double-hung windows and a delicate blue roof hint at what’s inside.

A grand entry reveals even more, with high ceilings, hardwood floors, a sweeping staircase, and a contemporary chandelier as a striking counterpoint.

Formal dining and living rooms can be found on either side, where old and new blend harmoniously in a way that can only be described as elegant.

“The owners completed extensive renovations a few years ago and the quality of the renovation is exquisite,” Kim explains. “They engaged Georgie Walker to do the interiors and it’s quite unique. It has a look and feel that’s contemporary, but complimentary of the traditional character of the home.”

The kitchen is stunning, with a stone island bench and splashback, hidden wet bar, and a butler’s pantry with a view! It lets out onto a private courtyard, just the start of the expansive grounds available to explore.

On the other side of the courtyard, a converted woodshed, now a sunroom, couldn’t be further from a shed – although there’s still some wood! Glass doors down both sides of the room let in light and air, with a dual-front wood fireplace keeping the whole space cosy.

Upstairs, the master suite has to be seen to be believed. The grand staircase leads to four of the bedrooms, but for late-night snacks, take the private stairs from the kitchen to the master bedroom. A marble en suite tucked behind the bedroom is all about luxury with a walk-in shower and twin sinks, and if the walkthrough robe isn’t enough there are bespoke built-in wardrobes too!

“The family that owns it now have two boys and it’s a wonderful family home,” Kim says. “There’s room for all sorts of things, and that’s the true luxury here.

“It’s significantly larger than other offerings in Battery Point, and it’s very private which is uncommon for the area.”

Vernon is within walking distance of Battery Point Village, Salamanca, and Hobart’s waterfront, with views of the Harbour from multiple areas of the home.

It’s hard to put a price on such an incredible property, and that’s why the owners are currently seeking expressions of interest, ending tomorrow at 5 pm.
