When you hear ‘artist’s residence’ you might think of a studio, but this three-level, six-bedroom home is more akin to a mansion than anything else!
Located in Perth’s blue-chip suburb of Dalkeith at 47 Viking Road, artist Susannah Skinner and her husband Ian commissioned Fremantle-based architect Blane Brackenridge to create their home in 2012, and the result is a work of art in itself.
Set beneath a curving glass facade, polished concrete floors and striking feature walls match the imposing concrete walls, softened by leafy gardens.
Ray White agent Jody Fewster says the home, which is open to offers in the low $5 million range, is unique.
“The home has this beautiful flow which is so hard to find,” she says. “It feels like you’re in a top art museum.”
On the ground floor, a large art studio overlooks the tree-filled backyard beside the private courtyard, with a home office just down the hall.
The left wing of the house contains the master suite and an open plan living space, including a kitchen, dining room, and even a sunken lounge! The kitchen enjoys stylish granite benchtops and splashbacks with a walk-in pantry and scullery, and a breakfast bar for meals on the go. The space overlooks the heated swimming pool and accompanying patio.
An exotic array of colourful citrus trees dot the space, accented by a flowing waterfall feature. The cabana alongside is the perfect entertainer’s area, and comes with an attached pergola deck, stone benchtops, and a matching barbecue!
Five of the six bedrooms are found on the upper floor around an open terrace, with the master suite enjoying ultimate privacy on the ground floor by the rear courtyard. There is endless wardrobe space, and a fully tiled en suite with granite trimmings, a comfortable rain shower, and a separate bathtub.
Finishing off the top floor, a spacious games room enjoys architectural glass walls leading out to another terrace, with a home gym just across the way.
Connecting it all is a striking spiral staircase, winding its way from the top floor down to a very special basement level.
“That staircase is seriously spectacular, it’s a work of art in itself,” Jody says. “It runs from the top down to this incredible wine cellar, it’s the sort of place you want to get locked away in. It’s a very cool space to hang out.”
The wine cellar comes fully equipped with a wine rack for literally thousands of bottles, drinks fridges, a bar, and even a dishwasher for when the guests leave!
An artistic mindset is evident in every aspect of the home, from the curving glass features and strong concrete bastions to the eye-catching pops of colour in the furniture. Even the home’s placement is well-chosen – schools across the road, the Swan River a few blocks away, and Perth’s CBD just 15 minutes drive north.
