Meet Zeke O’Neill of Harcourts Noosa, this week’s OzHomeNews Agent of the Week. At just 19 years of age, Zeke has already got some serious experience under his belt, including a stint over in the States.
We caught up with the Brisbane born agent to find out more about his impressive start in the industry and what his ambitions are for the future.
Tell us about your story and how you started out in real estate
“My Dad started in real estate the same year I was born, so I have been around it my whole life.
“I graduated in 2019 and pretty much straight after that I flew out to California and started my real estate career over there.
“I was the auction growth manager of Harcourts USA, so I covered San Francisco right the way down to San Diego including all the big names in between like Beverly Hills, Bel Air and Newport Beach.
“As COVID got worse in America I made the decision to come back home to Australia.
“Now I’m working for Harcourts Noosa which my parents own, selling some decent size properties.”
Any mentors or inspirational figures along the way?
“My father has been the biggest role model for me during my career.
“I’ve watched him my whole life! Sitting in the car on the way to school, whenever his phone rang it was, ‘Be quiet and listen, Dad’s working…’
“I’ve been listening to business conversations since I was little, and now love doing the residential sales!”
What are some standout moments you’ve had so far in your career?
“My first ever solo sale was an auction sale at Sunrise Beach and we set the reserve at $800,000.
“We ended up selling for $925,000 with eight registered bidders.
“Selling for $125,000 above reserve would be a great achievement for any agent, but for my first solo sale it was a really big deal!
“I’ve also just listed a couple of properties on the Noosa River and for one of them it’s actually the first time it’s ever been on the market.
“The same family has owned it since the 1930’s. To be selling that property is a big milestone for me.”
What’s the funniest thing you’ve come across in your time working in real estate?
“I have a funny story from when I was in California.
“I was on the phone to an agent and I was trying to explain to them why they should use auctions, but they weren’t having it.
“And the agent said, ‘Do you know who I am?’
“I didn’t have a clue who he was and it turns out he was one of the Altman brothers from Million Dollar Listing!
“And I said, ‘Oh yeh my dad used to watch your show back in Australia.’”
What’s your favourite thing about working in this industry?
“You never know what’s going to come next.
“That can also be a bit daunting sometimes but I find it so exciting.”
And your least favourite?
“The paperwork can be a bit of a pain sometimes but my Mum works for Harcourts Noosa too and she helps out massively there…”
“I’m pretty blessed!”
What advice would you give to yourself if you were starting out?
“Just keep calling people and keep trying to do business. Be persistent.”
Where would you like to think you’ll be in 10 years’ time?
“In ten years’ time, I’d like to be one of the biggest agencies on the Sunshine Coast and be a business owner as well.
What do you get up to in your downtime?
“I play a lot of touch football and I also am a Sunshine Coast referee for Rugby League.”
