On the back of a huge $17 million three-level penthouse sale in one of Melbourne’s most exclusive suburbs, Taylor Dow of Burtons Real Estate Agents is this week’s Agent of the Week.
OzHomeNews caught up with the South Yarra star to find out more about his real estate story and what makes him tick.
Tell us about your real estate journey
“I started out in real estate fresh out of high school, really.
“I sold my tea business at the age of 17 and then started working in real estate as soon as I could get my licence at 18 years old.
“I’d wanted to work in the industry since being a little kid. My dad’s a builder so he’d go to auctions most weekends and try and buy properties, and I’d go with him.
“I was always fascinated by how a deal was put together. From a young age, growing up watching Million Dollar Listings and all those shows in America and New York really motivated me.
“I was also not very good at school! I failed all my classes. Talking with people and doing deals was my forte – I learnt that from a young age.
“I started out by selling off the plan as I knew construction a lot more than I needed to really because of my parents, and I’ve been doing that for the last six or seven years.
“Now I’m 24 and still selling real estate. I don’t think I could see myself doing anything else.”
Any mentors or inspirational figures along the way?
“When I was a bit younger, I got really motivated by watching TV shows with guys like Josh Altman and Fredrik Eklund over in America.
“Now I’m a little older though, I really look up to my boss, Lucas Burton. He’s an exceptional operator and I’ve learnt a lot of things from him over the last three years. Also my close friend Jonathan Hallinan, he’s taught me a number of life and business lessons.
“But I take a lot of advice and bits of information from a lot of different people in the industry, I don’t really have just one mentor.”
Any big moments in your career that stand out?
“Selling the three-level penthouse off-market last week was the biggest highlight so far.
“Other than that, I’ve done a lot of deals circa $10 million, but the $17 million deal for the penthouse tops the lot!”
What’s the funniest thing you’ve come across during your time in real estate?
“Everyone always thinks I’m a hell of a lot older than I am! Everyone always asks me how are my wife and kids, but I’m not married and I don’t have any kids! It’s always funny when I tell them I’m only 24.”
What’s your favourite thing about working in this industry?
“I love sitting down with the developer at the very start when we sell them a development site and go through all the plans, prices, fixes and finishes with them, and really help them design their project.
“Given that I mainly sell off the plan, it’s usually at least a two-year turn around before our product gets to market, so it’s exciting to go through that whole process together from start to finish and selling out the whole project for my clients.”
And your least favourite?
“I don’t really think there is one for me. I work seven days a week from the early hours of the morning until late at night and I haven’t complained once.
“Printing out all the paperwork for contracts isn’t my favourite job, but that’s all I can think of!”
What advice would you give yourself if you were starting out?
“To calm down and relax a bit more, to not be in as much of a hurry.
“Take the necessary steps at the right time and walk before you can run.”
Where would you like to think you’ll be in 10 years’ time?
“To be a director of Burtons Estate Agents and also grow a bigger team underneath me with more offices. And, of course, have a loving family with some little kids running around!”
What do you get up to in your downtime?
“I used to play basketball for the state when I was younger, so I’m still very passionate about basketball.
“A lot of my friends are now playing in the NBA and NBL, so I enjoy watching a lot of basketball. Melbourne United are my team.”
