 Agent of the Week: Jordan Navybox

Meet this week’s Agent of the Week, 29-year-old buyer’s agent, golf lover and Managing Director of Cohen Handler, Jordan Navybox.

After moving to Brisbane from Sydney five years ago, Jordan’s career in real estate has taken off as he became the highest-grossing buyer’s agent in Queensland for 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Tell us about your story and how you started out in real estate

“I got into real estate whilst I was studying and it took me about two or three months for me to realise that I wanted a career in the industry, not just a job.

“I have always had an interest in design. art and music so I was drawn to
architecture, pardon the pun.

“However, within my first six months of working for a buyers agency, I decided to defer my degree and I never went back.”

What did you really want to be when you were growing up? 

“A tennis player or an architect.”

Any mentors or inspirational figures along the way? 

“In my early years, Gavin McPherson taught me a lot about investing and developing in real estate to generate wealth through property.

“That really excited me and drove my passion for the retail real estate we were purchasing for our clients at the time.”

“Later on in my career, my business partner Simon Cohen has had a huge impact on me.

“I phoned Simon asking to take his brand to the Queensland market and he answered by saying, ‘I’m super excited to discuss this but it’s 3am here in
Positano, can we speak next week?’

“From that call on, we’ve developed an awesome relationship and created a powerful business together”

“Outside of work, my family has always been so supportive of my ambitions in the industry, which is huge considering the hours required.”

Any large sales or big moments in your career that stand out? 

“Last week, I unconditionally purchased just over $18.5 million in under 48 hours across Thursday and Friday, that was certainly a highlight.

“Though just recently every single buyer’s agent in my office bought one or more properties each in a single week – and there are ten of us in total.

“There have been some huge individual sales along the way too, but without sounding too corny, I have strong ambitions to grow the buyer’s agent industry in Queensland and that’s why outcomes like that really stand out to me.”

What’s the funniest thing you’ve come across in your time working in real estate? 

“I was on the Gold Coast looking at a house for one of my clients, and the price was around $9 million.

“It was a really nice home and the agent said to me that next door was also for sale for$6.5 million, off-market.

“It turns out that it was the same owner of the house we were viewing. So we asked if they had originally planned to build a tennis court on that block and the agent said no… it was for their veggie patch.

“That’s an expensive veggie patch!”

What’s your favourite thing about working in this industry? 

“It’s really exciting to meet so many different people and personalities every day.

“It’s so fulfilling to call someone who has been looking for a house unsuccessfully for over six months before finding our help and telling them that they’ve finally bought.

“I also really enjoy the lifestyle we have created here at Cohn Handler Queensland. All the team love coming to work and we’ve built such a strong and dynamic culture.”

And your least favourite? 

“A lot of vendors in the current market are changing their expectations daily.

“Of course there are always negotiations, but in this current market, we have had to adapt quickly to this new norm.”

What advice would you give to yourself if you were starting out?

“Play the medium game! You don’t need everything this afternoon.

“I still want it this afternoon, even today I have four or five transactions that I am trying to close tonight, and I want them tonight!

“But if they come through by Tuesday or Wednesday then does it really matter? No.”

What changes in the industry would you like to see in 10 years’ time?

“I would like for 50 per cent of the buyers in the market using a buyer’s agent by 2030.”

Where are you heading once borders reopen? 

“France! I can’t wait to get back there.”
