On the back of recently winning the RateMyAgent 2021 Australian Rising Star of the Year award, Annette Leary is this week’s OzHomeNews Agent of the Week.
After a successful career in the healthcare sector, Annette decided to switch things up and try her hand at selling real estate in regional Victoria and she hasn’t looked back!
Tell us about your story and how you started out in real estate
“I worked in healthcare for a long time but was always travelling and never at home so I decided to finish my career in the industry but I wasn’t sure what I was going to do next.
“Because I had been in healthcare for so long, I’ve always been involved with different people and I was chatting with one of the local real estate agents and our conversation just went from there.
“It was the absolute perfect fit for me because I love houses, design and people and it meant that I was going to be able to spend more time at home.
“So here I am 2.5 years later and loving every minute of it.”
Have there been any mentors or inspirational figures along the way?
“During the first year and a half of my real estate career I spent a lot of time listening to webinars with all the big names like Tom Panos and Josh Tesolin.
“Will Walton is the principle of our office and has been in real estate for 25 years so I have to credit a lot to him.
“Adam Joske at Belle Property has been wonderful too and the fabulous thing about Belle Property is that it has an academy.
“So your training opportunities and your opportunities to network with other agents who have been in the industry for a long time have really been instrumental in allowing me to do as well as I have done so far in my short tenure.”
Any large sales or big moments in your career that stand out?
“In my first year in real estate I was Hocking Stuart’s Rookie of the Year and I recently won the female RateMyAgent Rising Stars of the Year award.
“The really lovely thing about winning the awards and one of the things that I think people should cherish is that even at an older age it is possible to have a major career change.”
What’s your favourite thing about working in this industry?
“For me it’s all about the people.
“We’re so privileged in what we do because the stories people share with us are very personal.
“One of the things that I enjoy the most is navigating people through the whole process of selling or buying a property.
“To be a real estate agent these days it’s not all about the house, you have to care about the person your vendors and buyers. It’s the experience that counts, for you and them.”
What advice would you give to yourself if you were starting out?
“Know everything about the people and the property you are selling, you save a lot of time in the long run if you do your homework at the begining.”
Do you have any long-term goals?
“A genuine long-term goal of mine is to create a real work-life balance because real estate can be very all-encompassing.
“You really do have to look after yourself to enable you to look after others.”
What do you get up to in your downtime?
“My husband and I have three border collies named Jack, Romey and Teddy, and they certainly keep us pretty busy!
“I’m into my AFL, I’m a big St Kilda fan and I also love film and reading too.”
