$5.3b Game-Changing Housing Program Planned for Victoria
Victoria is set to become the centre of a public housing boom, with a $5.3 billion cash injection earmarked to fund the construction of 12,000 new community homes.
The Big Housing Build will be Australia’s biggest ever investment in public housing and comes after the pandemic has served as a reminder of the importance of having a roof over your head.
Premier Daniel Andrews said: “It’s a profound investment in a stronger, fairer Victoria – a Victoria that recognises everyone deserves a place to call home.”
The program also aims to stimulate the state’s economy, with 10,000 jobs thought to be created over the next four years, with many roles created for those from diverse backgrounds through social procurement targets.
This will change lives – giving thousands of Victorians the security and stability of a home, and tens of thousands of Victorians a job.

The new homes will be constructed across metro and regional Victoria and will boost the state’s social housing supply by 10 per cent in four years with Minster for Housing, Richard Wynne, saying that the investment will put the state in a healthy housing position for the foreseeable future.
“This unprecedented housing blitz will deliver new homes and jobs across Melbourne and regional Victoria,” he said.
We’re delivering the biggest investment in social housing Victoria has ever seen – we’re not just investing in bricks and mortar, but the lives of Victorians for decades to come.

Of the planned 12,000 new homes, 2,000 will be allocated to Victorians living with mental illness, and 2,900 will be made into affordable housing and low-cost homes, with 25 per cent of the funding dedicated to regional Victoria.
