100-year-old home sells for $3.4M

The $3.4 million sale of a 100-year-old home in Sydney’s inner west has toppled suburb price records.

‘Montrose’, at 321 Marrickville Road, Marrickville, sold for $400,000 more than the previous suburb record a week before auction, with the owners reportedly very happy with the result.

Adrian William Real Estate agent William Pereira says the 1,249sqm property, which sits on one of the largest residential blocks in the suburb, has been well looked after.

“It’s heritage listed so you can only do so much with it, but it’s a nice home,” he says. “You walk in and it feels like you’ve gone back in time.”

From the expansive grounds to the interior of the residence, many original features are still evident. Four original cast iron fireplaces are still in use, and the beautiful leadlight windows emit a rainbow of colours when the light hits them.

Walking beneath the pressed copper ceilings feels like stepping into a bygone era, accentuated by the impressive decorative walls and marble floors.

Nowhere is the beautiful mix of period grandeur and modern style more obvious than in the kitchen. Leadlight windows flood the room with light, shining off polished benchtops and a wonderfully modern range.

Each of the five bedrooms comes with its own special features. The two bedrooms on the eastern edge of the house come with their own studies and en suites, while the two on the northern edge share a sunroom and study. As for the master suite, the west-facing double-size room has its own fireplace, a bay window perfect for lounging, and delicately-decorated walls.

The original tiled verandah wraps around the southern corner of the home, embracing the classic brickwork and stone detailing. Just a few steps away, and spreading out on all sides, the lawn conveys a sense of fun and relaxation – probably helped by the tyre swing attached to a shady tree!

With all that, and such close proximity to nearby cafes, bars and shops, it’s no surprise Montrose attracted such incredible interest. More than 70 groups inspected the iconic home, with particularly strong interest from locals, but it was a couple from the Blue Mountains who made the record-breaking offer that saw the home sell prior to auction.

“The buyers that bought it, this house is like a mini version of their old property so they loved it,” William says. “The vendors were over the moon with this result, they were ready to move on.”
